17. WrestleMania 1

The granddaddy of the granddaddy of them all, WrestleMania 1 was Vince McMahon’s brainchild, a combination of his Rock & Wrestling Connection and the celebrity gaga that would attract a mainstream audience.

The result was a PPV chock-full of strange pop culture references like Liberace as a timekeeper, Muhammad Ali as a guest referee, Cyndi Lauper seconding Wendi Richter, and of course, Mr. T. tagging with Hulk Hogan to defeat Rowdy Roddy Piper & Paul Orndorff.

The matches themselves were nothing special, as nothing would rise to the level of a classic. But the first-ever WrestleMania largely gets a pass because it was such an oddity: a supershow of superstars and celebrities that thrust professional wrestling into the limelight in a way it hadn’t been before.

And 35 years later, WrestleMania is still going strong – and according to Vince, no viral pandemic is going to stop it!
