In the weeks leading up to Raw's historic 1,000th episode on 23 July 2012, general managers of the past were brought back to take control of the flagship show for a night. In that time, fans witnessed the returns of Mick Foley, Vickie Guerrero, and even the infamous Anonymous Raw general manager, all leading to the announcement of the new person in charge on Raw 1000.

As it turned out, it was AJ Lee was given the power to run Raw. Some were disappointed by the reveal, and it hardly made sense storyline-wise considering AJ's character was crazy, but it added a different dynamic to the role and the show overall. She was already the hottest thing going in WWE that summer, so it was logical to promote her to a more prominent position on-screen.

She wasn't your typical vindictive heel authority figure, either. Although she remained a babyface, she set her sights on putting her former flames Daniel Bryan and Kane through the ringer, eventually leading to the formation of Team Hell No. On occasion, AJ also butted heads with then-WWE champion and future off-screen husband CM Punk.

In the midst of her heated "scandal" with John Cena that October, she resigned from her role as GM and returned to the ring as a wrestler.
