TakeOver was still finding its feet as a format in September 2014, but it had already begun getting an awful lot right in spite of some obvious shortcut filler used as padding elsewhere.

Baron Corbin and Bull Dempsey scored squash wins over CJ Parker and Mojo Rawley respectively to further their only-okay monsters feud, whilst Enzo Amore was more over than good in a win over Sylvester Lefort that resulted in Marcus Louis getting a comedy haircut later that night. But belts mattered again in NXT, and Full Sail was gifted three high end title matches to express the point.

The Lucha Dragons' win over The Ascension has a quaint charm about it now but was enormous in context, while Bayley's loss to Charlotte was just one more setback in a journey to the title full of them. Neville's protection of his Championship against Tyson Kidd, Tyler Breeze and especially Sami Zayn was loaded with pathos - 'The Underdog From The Underground' had the measure of the 'Man That Gravity Forgot' but couldn't quite creep over the line that night.

Much like the brand he was the lifeblood of, his time at the top was at long last on the horizon.
