Were it not for injury, we might be talking about Samoa Joe as one of WrestleMania 34's marquee names. Sadly, two desperately ill-timed knocks have halted his march up the Monday Night Raw pecking order, with time to get back on track in time for the Show of Shows now in short supply.

That said, Joe can still look back on his first 12 months as a fully-fledged member of the WWE main roster with an enormous amount of pride. Despite being left off the card at last year's April showpiece, he went on to challenge Brock Lesnar in his first Universal Title defence in the summer.

Then there is the time he spent climbing up the developmental ranks in NXT, a stage which is at least equal to that provided by Impact (and for most people's money, a little grander). There, Joe is one of only two ostensible "rookies" - alongside Shinsuke Nakamura - to have held the biggest prize twice.

So while there is plenty left for the man Jeremy Borash used to introduce as the Samoan Submission Machine to accomplish, his decision to jump ship has already been more than vindicated.
