A exquisitely-booked match until the final three seconds, the 'Summerslam' main event was the pinnacle of WWE's paradoxical mishandling of Bill Goldberg in his maiden run with the company.

A heavy favourite in his chase for the title, Goldberg lined up with the best of the rest on Raw to dethrone the tyrannical Triple H, who had been coasting as World Champion with a sea of abysmal in-ring displays for the prior eighteen months.

During the match, WWE finally cottoned on to the Goldberg formula, allowing him to viciously plough through the entire field (with the exception of the previously eliminated Kevin Nash). Coming finally to Triple H - himself hiding in his pod for ten minutes following a Shawn Michaels superkick - the dominant challenger was primed to finish the job, much to the delight of the capacity crowd.

Smashing 'The Game' all over the Chamber, Goldberg was primed to hit his spear, but Ric Flair slid a sledgehammer in to the ring allowing Triple H to strike him for an abrupt and deeply unsatisfying victory.Hunter, Flair and Randy Orton then engaged in a long beatdown of Goldberg to close the Pay-Per-View.

He'd defeat Triple H one month later in a singles match, but the magic had long subsided by then.
