WWE had a job on their hands convincing audiences that anyone other than a white hot Stone Cold Steve Austin was winning 1998's Royal Rumble, but employed a shrewd strategy in order to do so.

Everybody was motivated to rush 'The Rattlesnake'. Austin was targeted before and during the contest itself, and yet remained wise to the schemes and dreams of those he knew he had to rush past. The suspense in the arena was as apparent as the relief expressed by the audience when he charged to victory.
