Ranking Every WWE Royal Rumble Since 2010
9. 2012
Three years before Roman Reigns was booed out of the Wells Fargo Center, the Royal Rumble was held in St Louis, Missouri and it was a night full of surprises.
During the main event, the Rumble match saw returns from Mick Foley, Kharma and the winner of the first-ever Royal Rumble match, Jim Duggan. Foley engaged with the 'Milan Miracle' Santino Marella, in a spot involving both of their signature moves - 'Mr Socko' and 'The Cobra'. Also, this event was the only time that the entire commentary desk has performed in a Royal Rumble, with surprise appearances from Michael Cole, Booker T and Jerry Lawler. It also saw Kofi Kingston survive elimination in an outrageous fashion yet again, this time landing on his hands and walking on them all the way back into the ring.
However, 2012's January pay-per-view event was not without its issues.
The eight-Diva tag team match was poorly received, the finish of Kane vs. John Cena was widely regarded as poor booking - as most matches ending with a double count-out usually are - and the inclusion of a blink-and-you'll-miss-it match between Brodus Clay and Drew McIntyre left fans scratching their heads while trying to find any reasoning behind it.
Thankfully, the arena did not ring with a chorus of boos when the eventual winner was revealed as the 'Celtic Warrior' Sheamus, with the WWE Universe in attendance being sent home happy - a trend which did not continue for future Royal Rumble pay-per-views.
