WrestleMania X-Seven was already on course to being the most enjoyable PPV in company history, with Angle/Benoit, the McMahon street fight, and TLC II all show-stealers. It needed something to tip it over the edge, though, and only Rock/Austin could have done it.

There has seldom been a better packaged match, with the “My Way” video capable of sending chills down the spine of any fan of a certain age. The story here is fantastically layered: the men don’t necessarily hate each other; it’s just that Austin physically and spiritually needs to defeat Rock and reclaim his spot at the top of the heap.

From the off, it’s pure intensity. They tear into each other in and outside the ring, and soon both men are busted open. Besides the rabid brawling, it’s the little details that make this match, like Austin, in desperation, pulling out his old Million Dollar Dream finisher to try and put the match away.

Ultimately, it’s down to another Vince interference, this time on behalf of Austin, to allow Stone Cold to get the win. Austin’s deal with the devil still rankles with many viewers, but as a soap opera high point to one of the sport’s greatest ever stories, it’s kind of perfect, and still talked about to this day.
