If you let slide the fact that of course this was all endorsed by WWE - it's a work and the production truck cued up their theme - there was a great, characterful element behind the Shield's entrance.

With their purpose wrapped in mystery, the Shield didn't belong to the institution. They deemed it a corrupt relic rampant with injustice. That, or they were mercenaries hiding from the glare of the secret corruption they themselves dealt in.

In any event, they didn't belong to a locker room they terrorised and overwhelmed in the ring, and so they didn't enter it. They descended on the ring from the hallways, the parking lot - somewhere in the shadows.

At WrestleMania 29, they did belong, getting over as megastars just months in, received as major league acts by a vista of enthused fans crying out for new blood.
