What happened: Following Money in the Bank, both Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins had a claim to a WWE World Championship rematch. The result was that the long-awaited Shield triple-threat bout was signed for Battleground, which would be the final PPV before WWE's roster split took effect. Though the build to the match was hurt by Reigns's Wellness Policy suspension, and the whole thing felt a lot less important than one would have hoped, the bout itself was a strong one. In the end, Reigns Speared Rollins, but Ambrose hit Reigns with Dirty Deeds to win the match and keep the title.

Why it was great: It was nice to see Ambrose, whom many pegged as the Shield alumnus least likely to be a main-event star, defeat his former partners, but there was more to his victory than just personal absolution. Though the draft hadn't gone into effect yet, the rosters had been decided, and of the three former Shield members, only Ambrose was headed to Smackdown. That meant that if he won, Smackdown would get the WWE World Championship, but if he lost, the blue brand would be without a major title and would have to create one out of thin air. It made for an exciting environment where announcer JBL was pulling for Ambrose, and where the Smackdown locker room hoisted "The Lunatic Fringe" up on their shoulders following his win.
