Rey & Dominik Mysterio Make History At WWE WrestleMania Backlash
Here's what Rey & Dominik Mysterio's SmackDown Tag Team Title win really means.
Rey and Dominik Mysterio have become the first father/son duo to ever hold WWE gold.
The duo defeated the Dirty Dawgs of Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode at WrestleMania Backlash last night, becoming SmackDown Tag Team Champions in the process. Thus commences Dominik's first title reign in the company, and his father's first since dropping the United States Championship to Andrade at a Madison Square Garden house sow in December 2019.
WWE worked a pre-match angle that saw Dominik attacked by Roode and Ziggler backstage. This meant his father was left to fight the heels alone, though Dominik returned during the bout itself, joining the action as the match was going on.
Dominik scored the decisive pinfall following a Frog Splash on Roode after his dad had wiped the former NXT Champion out with a 619. Rey took Ziggler down on the outside to prevent him from dashing in and breaking up the pinfall.
The Mysterios celebrated in the ring afterwards.
The Dirty Dawgs had reigned for 128 days, having taken the belts from the Street Profits in January. Incredibly, it took Roode and Ziggler almost three months to defend the straps, not putting them on the line until 1 April.
