After leaving AEW, Rey Fenix could well be set for WrestleMania.

After months and months of speculation over his future, Rey Fenix has now finally departed AEW.

Per Fightful Select, AEW has released Fenix, meaning the hugely talented 34-year-old is a free agent who could realistically turn up in another promotion at any point he so chooses.

As for what is next for Fenix, this report notes that he's expected to sign with WWE "imminently". So much so, Fanatics have already started working on WWE merchandise for the former AEW International Champion.

Of course, Rey Fenix is the brother of Penta, with both Lucha Bros heavily rumoured for a WWE move throughout last year. In the case of Penta, he jumped to WWE once his AEW deal was up and has made a major impact in his first few months with the market leader. For Fenix, though, AEW added time to his contract due to certain spells spent on the sidelines through injury.

Fenix's AEW contract was extended through until later this year, with the talent himself taking to social media at several points with posts that alluded to, as he put it, inhumane treatment. Fightful mentions how AEW had contemplated releasing Fenix last November, but that changed once those online posts surfaced.

There obviously hadn't been any creative plans in place for Rey Fenix for several months, with him last wrestling for AEW on a July episode of Collision, where he picked up a win over Tony Nese. Fenix, Penta, and PAC were scheduled to win the AEW Trios Titles last year before it became clear that the Lucha Bros intended to exit the promotion.

Those who Fightful spoke to in AEW believe that Rey Fenix will have had to sign a non-disparagement agreement in order to secure his release. Likewise, sources who the outlet spoke to within WWE expect Fenix to join the company, with him expected to join Penta on the main roster.

The Lucha Bros In WWE

Unquestionably, the Lucha Bros tandem of Penta and Rey Fenix would be a huge boost for WWE's tag team divisions. If Fenix does indeed join his brother on the Raw roster, that could well thrust that tandem into the World Tag Team Championship picture in time for WrestleMania 41. Of course, those titles are currently held by the War Raiders.

Given how well Penta has been presented since debuting for WWE in January, there is plenty of steam already behind him as a singles act with genuine main event potential. One could argue that Penta has a bigger upside as a singles star than as one half of a tag team right now, but the other side of that argument is that the buzz around Penta could nicely give Fenix an automatic shot in the arm were he to join his older brother on Raw.

Heck, WWE might surprise us all and keep Penta and Rey Fenix separate for a little while, although that does appear extremely unlikely. Either way, in Fenix, WWE will have themselves one of the most exciting in-ring workers on the planet if, as expected, he imminently signs with the company.
