Ric Flair 30 For 30: 15 Things We Learned
3. The Tragic Circumstances Of Reid's Death
The final segment of the show focuses on the tragic death of Flair's son Reid in 2013 from a heroin overdose. Flair reminisces on his son's time as a young amateur wrestler, and chillingly laughs about Reid's fondness for alcohol as a teenager.
As an adult, Reid enjoyed some success in Japan, but Charlotte (real name Ashley) goes on to comment that he was provoked a lot for being the son of an industry legend, and perhaps it hit him harder than anyone realised.
Triple H then surprisingly revealed that after Reid attempted to work for WWE and his first drug test came back with illicit substances on it. Out of courtesy to Flair, Trips warned Reid about a follow-up test, which Reid failed even worse. Ric, sadly, seemed to be in denial about it all, at least according to Hunter.
After returning from Japan, Reid was immediately drunk off the plane and high on pills by the time his dad came to meet him. A chilling 911 call then plays out detailing Reid's fatal overdose, as Ric tearfully recalls the medics failing to revive him.
It's emotionally shattering stuff, capped by the interviewer asking Flair if there was anything left unsaid to Reid, to which he responds, "I wish you were here, I had so much fun with you. I regret the fact that sometimes I was your best friend instead of your dad."
If you're a long-time wrestling fan and didn't well up at this, well, you're probably not a long-time wrestling fan.
