Should Demetrious Johnson Fight TJ Dillashaw
7. Yes – UFC Will Finally Promote DJ Properly
Not everyone is set for stardom. Demetrious Johnson is the consensus pound-for-pound #1 in MMA right now. He's just not the draw you'd hope a five year world champion who beats everyone would be. That being said, Johnson can be a bigger star than he currently is, and UFC can certainly do a better job in marketing both him and the division. UFC promote pay-per-view co-main events a million times better than they promoted Johnson vs. Reis back in April.
There is definitely a valid train of thought that "DJ can't draw" is at least partly a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's not that UFC doesn't want to promote him. It's just that they've done a pretty poor job overall in promoting a dominant world champion no-one can touch. Compare his push to the Ronda Rousey push and draw your own conclusion.
You can tell though by the enthusiasm in which they're pushing for this fight, and the fact it is targeted to main event UFC 215, that they'll finally go all on on Demetrious. DJ hasn't main evented a pay-per-view in a couple of years, and when he did main event, it was usually because another title fight fell out and he was promoted from co-main. Potentially setting the title defence record of 11 would be front and centre of all the promotional work. UFC would focus heavily on DJ for the first time ever, and it could be DJ's real breakthrough to the casual fan base.
