The above number of fervent British fans who made up the sea of waving green foam fingers at SummerSlam '92 is not in dispute, give or a take a couple. The very fact this astronomical figure isn't an outright fabrication has long been the source of some considerable distress for WWE's number-fiddling boardroom statisticians - to the extent it's often been outright ignored.

Were it not for the lie spun by the promotion at WrestleMania III, which hyperbolically inflated its massive crowd to ludicrous proportions, WWE could have announced a legitimate record for their first and only major show on British soil. To do so would have been to admit that the much-vaunted 93,173 number at Michigan's Pontiac Silverdome was complete hokum.

The verified mass has since proven something of an albatross around the neck of the company's record-massaging division. To this day, WWE have yet to undisputedly top it; even the outrageous 101,763 announced for WrestleMania 32 revises down to around 79,000 with some scrutiny. It's somewhat ironic that a company so accustomed to parping their trumpet would rather everyone forget one of the most successful events in their history.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
