Television's 10 Best "Wrestling Episodes"

7. "Fight Club" - The X-Files

boy meets world
Fox

Quick, imagine the ninetiest thing ever! Did you imagine an episode of The X-Files wherein Kathy Griffin gets romantically involved with the angry ex-husband from the beginning of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and he gets beaten up by Rob Van Dam? The only thing that keeps it from ascending to MAXIMUM NINETIES is the fact that this episode aired in 2000, but even that's somewhat mitigated by the fact that there are two Kathy Griffins.

You see, this episode deals with a pair of supernaturally-linked doppelgängers, both of whom are in love with hard-luck wrestler Bert "Titanic" Zupanic. Bert owes a great deal of money to his promoter, who threatens to pull him from a major payday main event of he doesn't pay up. It's probably not surprising given that literally every BS story on the X-Files turns out to be true, but the episode treats wrestling as a genuine combat sport. Cameos of interest for wrestling fans: Rob Van Dam as an executioner-type heel, and yet another role for Judo Gene LeBell (!) as the owner of a dive bar.

Immortal Dialogue: “I Yankee Doodled into a plastic cup!”
