Tentative Date For WWE's First NXT 2.0 TakeOver Confirmed?
Here's when NXT 2.0's first TakeOver-style event could go down...
Last week's news that WWE didn't have any NXT TakeOver events listed on its internal calendar for the remainder of 2021 sparked speculation on the developmental supercard's future, though it looks like the promotion now has something up its sleeve for next month.
Per Wrestlenomics' Brandon Thurston, who tweeted as much on Monday evening, WWE has tentatively set Sunday 5 December for a TakeOver-style show:-
Tentative date for the first NXT 2.0 Takeover is Sunday, December 5, according to multiple sources. Have asked but couldn’t confirm if “Takeover” will continue to be the brand name.— Brandon Thurston (@BrandonThurston) November 2, 2021
We'll likely have to wait to find out whether or not WWE plans on rebranding the pseudo-pay-per-view, though NXT's recent reboot to NXT 2.0 opens that possibility, with the rainbow brand scarcely recognisable from the show it was in Summer.
WWE's last NXT TakeOver show, TakeOver 36, took place on Sunday 22 August. It was headlined by Samoa Joe defeating the outgoing Karrion Kross to become NXT Champion, though developmental was soon rebranded into a completely different monster, with Joe relinquishing his title due to "injury" soon after. The veteran is yet to return to television.
Owing primarily to the COVID-19 pandemic, WWE's last nine TakeOver shows have all taken place at either the WWE Performance Center or Full Sail University. There is currently no word on whether or not it will return to the road in the future.
