Chyna Betrays Triple H 1999

As 1998 ended and 1999 began, Triple H was beginning to become a true main event performer in what was then the World Wrestling Federation. The Rock was the top dog at the time, and one night removed from a gruelling 'I Quit' match against Mankind (yes, the one with all the chair shots) at the 1999 Royal Rumble Rocky put the WWF Championship on the line in similar circumstances against the leader f D-Generation X.

The match itself was fairly by-the-numbers, but the finish was notable to say the least. It was Triple H who uttered those five letters to lose the math, as Kane threatened to deliver a Chokeslam to Chyna. Looking back this was a fairly puzzling decision, as Chyna had spent the previous couple of years being built up as every bit as physically imposing as the men.

Triple H quit though, in order to save Chyna. This would immediately come back to haunt Hunter (haunter?) however, as Chyna attacked him to compound his misery and join the Corporation. Whilst shocking at the time, Hunter turned his back on DX himself a few months later, lessening the importance of this somewhat.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
