On June 17th, 2013, Mark Henry pulled one of the biggest ruses in WWE history. Having returned from a nine-month injury absence in February, Henry was once against sidelined through ill health in May. It looked like his career was finally over, and after teasing the end on social media, Henry gave a stirring “retirement” speech after returning to Raw.

It was the best promo of Henry’s career, and one so moving that it drove a number of audience members to tears. Decked-out in his now famous salmon jacket, Henry delivered his farewell straight from the heart, and it was impossible not to feel for the guy as he bared his soul for the audience.

Henry did an expert job of manipulating the crowd’s emotions before pulling the trigger. Even WWE Champion John Cena was duped, and as Henry turned around and destroyed him with a World’s Strongest Slam, it was the ultimate heel move.

The Salmon Jacket Incident pushed Henry back into the main event, and made him as relevant as he’d been since his World Heavyweight Championship run. He was sadly unsuccessful in his quest to win the WWE Championship and fell down the rankings a few months later, but the Cena feud had Henry harking back to his career’s finest work. A short run, but one of the most memorable of his career.
