The Rock turned heel to join Vince McMahon’s Corporation in 1998, and became WWE Champion for the very first time at Survivor Series. In a finish reminiscent of the Montreal Screwjob, Vince’s assistance saw Rocky screw Mankind out of the gold, resulting in a double turn for both competitors, and starting one of the most successful periods of The Rock’s career.

The Rock was in tremendous form as Vince McMahon’s corporate champion. Decked-out in flashy shirts and designer shades, Rocky was cutting razor-sharp heel promos on a weekly basis, and embarked on an incredible feud with Mankind that led them all the way to WrestleMania 15’s main event. It was during this stage that Rocky became one of the most important performers in the industry, and while his corporate spell ended with another organic face turn, Rocky was on fire for the 18 months he was aligned with the McMahons.

Some regard Corporate Rock as one of the greatest heels of all-time, but Rocky would go on to better himself in this regard later in his career. This persona remains one of Rock’s most successful, however. It sealed his transition from popular upper-midcarder to genuine main eventer, and provided a perfect platform for the outrageous success that was to follow.
