Hands up everyone who was genuinely excited by the prospect of Undertaker vs. Kane at WrestleMania XX?

No, I’m not talking Deadman 'Taker, but the idea of the match that was floated around originally, as Kane helped bury the big brother that had gotten a bit too into his biker gang. The returning Deadman was great when it happened, but until it did it wasn't really that exciting a prospect.

Which makes it all the more amazing that it was. Taker returned at WMXX as The Deadman, The Phenom, The Demon of Death Valley, only all of the histrionics were ramped up to 100. The druids were always around, Paul Bearer was back and fatter than ever, and The Deadman’s entrances seemed to take longer than his actual matches most of the time.

It shouldn’t have worked, but it was brilliant.

Sure, some of Undertaker’s matches during this time weren’t exactly barnstormers. He was saddled with working with big guys, men like Heidenreich, The Great Khali and the like, but when he was able to mix it up with smaller men such as Kurt Angle or Randy Orton he was in the best shape of his career.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
