The Quote That Sums Up WWE's Problem Perfectly

Wrestling company recruits talent, on the basis of the talent that the talent has, because the independent circuit is not inexplicably demonised. Talent is allowed talent to showcase that talent. Talent is assigned veteran mind to guide said talent depending on the extent to which their level of experience warrants guidance.

Here's how it actually works (or does not work) in WWE:

WWE recruits talent. WWE adds telegenic gimmick sheen and a new ring name if that practise is in vogue that day or if they're not considered enough of a name, which tacitly undermines them, but that's by the by. WWE adds mandated entrance pose and teaches them the dark arts of the scripted promo train. Talent is instructed to work to the camera, often at the expense of immersive, in-the-moment expression. Talent graduates to the main roster (i.e. the ultimate reason they were signed) when in their mid-to-late 30s and exposed to the same audience. Vince McMahon makes an assessment of their ability and readiness independent of the very expensive system he signed off on, sometimes after talent has scored a major victory over a top name (!).

End scene. And, in some cases, careers.

This isn't a non-partisan deconstruction of the process. WWE NXT is literally unnecessary as prescribed by WWE.
