The REAL Reason WWE Is Pushing Finn Bálor
Thus far, WWE has done very, very little to show us—even promote—the Demon character Bálor so passionately crafted. The mythology of the Demon once explained its scarce presence; Bálor became a darker, more aggressive entity when adorned in his war paint. Every appearance threatened to consume the smiling man within. Without this explanation, we can only sympathise with Jonathan Coachman—imagine sympathising with Jonathan f*cking Coachman—and ask ourselves why he simply doesn’t revert to the undefeated Demon character by default?
AEW is desperate to impress, and would surely A) want Bálor in the first instance, and B) afford the man free reign over the character—or a version of it—to fulfil that dormant artistic license. This is an entity so incredibly creative that it arguably outgrew the second biggest wrestling company on the planet by using the same, free-to-use platform available to you and I.
That Demon character—or its promise, at least—remains somehow untainted by WWE’s chronically apathetic booking. At SummerSlam ’18, the Demon emerged. At the merest hint, an exhausted crowd brought the noise. They knew they were in the midst of that rarest of things: a true star untainted by normalisation. Blood red lights flooded the arena, giving way to an apocalyptic skyline on the tron. The Demon drew a genuine star reaction following this visual feast of a presentation—and imagine if there were any sort of substance enriching the style. This version of Bálor is a megastar. This version of Bálor may yet be summoned by a company that has contrived to make a Demon a mere mortal.
