The Real Reason WWE Needs To Push Kevin Owens
It is a testament to his talent, and form, that fans are willing to invest in the first place. If WWE loses interest in Owens in the autumn months, it will exacerbate every problem WWE faces.
WWE has patterned Kevin Owens, from his finisher to his antagonist, as the next Stone Cold Steve Austin. Lofty and unimaginative, whatever, it’s working. For now. But the Such Good Sh*t will happen, and that isn’t latent cynicism. Seth Rollins was the next Steve Austin on the Stomping Grounds go-home RAW; just weeks later, he became the next John Cena by virtue of his rotten, lame impersonation of Brock Lesnar.
On the surface, that appears to be a terrible route to take. But is it?
This isn’t just a crucial issue of brand trust; Kevin Owens might be the only performer in the entire WWE system capable of excelling within the top babyface role fashioned in Vince McMahon’s weird image. Seth Rollins isn’t equipped with the comedic chops WWE feels its top babyface must showcase. Roman Reigns isn’t the answer, either. Kofi Kingston is struggling to convince enough fans that he is main event material. They already botched Daniel Bryan’s babyface run.
Kevin Owens is the answer.
