The Rock's 10 Best Matches Ever
2. Vs. Hulk Hogan (WrestleMania X8)
If you thought the crowd at No Mercy was harsh toward the predominantly-heroic Rock, Toronto can do you one better. Whether it was the application of nostalgia goggles, or just the need to be ironic (Bizarroland, they call it), Toronto hailed Hogan as a deity coming out of some self-imposed exile, whereas Rock as merely commoner swine that shared the spotlight with him.
That sort of reaction would faze less-experienced, thinner-skinned babyfaces, but not Rock. He rose to the occasion, guiding his much older opponent through the key spots, augmenting the legitimate big fight feel. While the two managed to work within their designated alignments, they pulled back the curtain on enough of the "Hogan vs. villain" formula to really set the crowd off.
Rock's disbelief at Hogan's Hulk Up sequence will forever be an enduring image, in part because Rock gave in fully to the crowd's wants, and served himself up as just another bug-eyed patsy for the Superman Comeback. Even when the crowd rejects him, Rock still manages to give them what they want.
