11. Vs. Diesel - WrestleMania XII

Lost amid the quad jokes and his quantifiable status as the worst-drawing WWF Champion in history is that Diesel contested many a gripping match in his much-derided first tenure.

This was no In Your House: Good Friends, Better Enemies stunner with Shawn Michaels, granted, but it was pitched about as well as it could have been. The two big men crashed into one another with a speed and intensity belying their reputations and capabilities, but it was ‘Taker who was primarily responsible for the match’s startling quality. He selflessly bumped around the ring like a mad man in order to transcend the expected dynamic.

Diesel infamously tanked (sorry) as the company’s top babyface, but he was much better suited to the heel role, maintaining audience enthusiasm in his protracted stretch of offence with his smug and glib posturing - a fascinating premonition of the superstar he became in WCW just months later.

The five-moves-of-doom accusations once levelled at John Cena were snarky and reductive, but literally true in Diesel’s case - but paired with the right opponent, he did not need any more.

‘Taker was just that; in 1996, he was finally afforded the chance to show that he was something much more than foil for the monster of the week.
