The outcome of the match was divisive. The vast majority of fans, once the incredible shock wore off, were disgusted that WWE wasted the last star-making stool it had at its disposal on a man who, as well as already being a megastar, was not around anywhere near long enough to do much of anything with the heat transferred to him.

A minority were in praise of it, reasoning that only an emotionless mercenary like Lesnar could withstand the pressure. In the aftermath, he assumed 'Taker's mantle as an unbeatable phenom. His subsequent decimation of John Cena at SummerSlam and reign with the World Heavyweight Title established him as the man he should have been promoted as since day one - but no proper full-time stars were made until AJ Styles debuted at the Royal Rumble nearly two years later . Styles, though, was already a star. Both sides had a point.

What isn't up for debate is the quality of the match; hampered by an early concussion suffered by the Undertaker, it was at once dull and depressing. 'Taker endured Lesnar's brutal but slow and unspectacular offence with glassy eyes.

Two records died that night: the Undertaker's mercurial run of classics and his lengthy winning streak. That both did so in dubious circumstances was a sobering counterpoint to the party thrown elsewhere.
