21. HBK Gets Disrespectful, Brother! (2005)
It was real tempting to put Vickie Guerrero’s late run in on Eddie vs. Rey Mysterio ladder match here, but no. The spot goes to Shawn Michaels for turning the clock back to his 1996-style temper tantrums and refusing to do solid business with Hulk Hogan. They weren’t getting along, so Shawn decided to go into hyper-sell mode.
That made a mockery of the clash, and the irony here is that Michaels wanted to poke back at Hulk's own selfishness...by being the most selfish between both of them. Think about it for a second: HBK turned into everything he claimed to stand against at that point in his career, and he did it because he could.
He was still untouchable. In fact, he was arguably even more so than he'd been during the 90s. That's not to suggest that Hogan was a saint who didn't rub many the wrong way by vetoing booking ('That doesn't work for me, brother') or making sure he was the focal point, but Shawn's 'fight fire with fire' mentality threatened the bout's quality.
That's something he had always stood against where possible. His pay-per-view performances had to be top class even if his private life or body was falling apart. This is a man who even put in strong workrate at Survivor Series 1997 when he knew he'd be screwing over Bret Hart in mere minutes!
At SummerSlam 2005, Michaels got a petted lip and went into business for himself. Somehow, Hulk was able to keep it together instead of just throwing his hands up and walking out of there like it was Bash The Beach 2000.
