The WWE Half-Year Awards 2018

8. Best Card: Royal Rumble 2018

WWE 2018 HALF YEAR
WWE.com

Deviating from the recent gut-punching tradition, this year's Royal Rumble was a unanimous triumph, delivering quality in the marquee men's match to equal 1992's banner effort, a successful celebration of the past and present in the women's equivalent, and feelgood outcomes - so often in short supply of late - to both.

Though the show was unbalanced, it hardly mattered. The undercard, save for an animated WWE Title opener featuring AJ Styles and buddies Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn, offered little of consequence, but it only really existed as dressing to the two sizeable main courses. The stamina of a typical WWE audience was called into question in promoting two eponymous contests tickling the hour mark, with further doubts about how receptive they'd be to a first-time women's variety. Both delivered, and for once, outrage was not on the menu, as darlings Asuka and Shinsuke Nakamura saw off the tease of the old guard to send fans home happy.

The last-minute appearance of Ronda Rousey was just the icing on the cake.

Runner-up: Money in the Bank 2018

Save a James Ellsworth-shaped lull in the middle, the annual ladder scramble - much like the Rumble - delivered despite the double duty. And again, Rousey was on hand to cap it off.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
