THIS Is WWE's Secret Biggest Problem
The paradigm shift is brutal; the mere existence of AEW has created a tribal derangement to a point by which WWE is only ever discussed in relation to it. And it goes both ways: the more fanatical of AEW fans will say this by default, but really, what AEW excels at - and it isn't everything - makes WWE all but unwatchable. The idea, we were told, was that new competition would stir up the old bloodlust within WWE, manifesting as a better product.
The precise opposite is true, and yes, your writer will take a victory lap.
AEW has brought WWE's many, many issues into harsh focus by simply existing. The promos make WWE's scripts look even more stilted. The relaxed commentary makes it feel even more like WWE's commentary team is being held at gunpoint. The long-term booking has reminded us of the sensation of anticipation, where watching WWE in contrast just feels like things happening, and you can do that by sitting in front of a f*cking washing machine - only, WWE's camera cuts would make you feel slightly more nauseous. The hypnotic effect of the washer might even convince one to stick around for the third hour.
This isn't just a case of Twitter's small user sample skewing what is only qualitative data. The total lack of noise on social media is reflected in the ratings. AEW is close to defeating RAW and Fox's SmackDown in key, advertiser-friendly demos, if it hasn't already.
