This Was NEVER Jey Uso's Story...

Did WWE really consider putting Jey Uso over Roman Reigns at SummerSlam 2023?

WWE never put serious consideration into having Jey Uso dethrone Roman Reigns as Undisputed Universal Champion at SummerSlam 2023, reports Dave Meltzer.

Reigns defeated his cousin and former Bloodline stablemate on the 5 August premium live event, profiting from Jimmy Uso turning on his twin brother, which allowed the 'Tribal Chief' time to spear Jey through a table and land the pinfall. Per Meltzer, this was always the plan.

Appearing on McGuire on Wrestling, Meltzer reported that he hadn't heard of anyone talking about Uso dethroning Reigns as a possibility. WWE has several months' worth of plans lined up for Roman as Universal Champion, too.

Meltzer noted that like Sami Zayn and Cody Rhodes before him, fans could have made the argument that the popular Jey should have beaten Reigns. WWE's business stayed strong in the wake of the Cody loss in particular, justifying the company's decision, though Meltzer is of the belief that Rhodes will eventually unseat Roman at the top.

At the time of writing, Reigns had been a top-level WWE Champion since dethroning Bray Wyatt for the Universal strap in August 2020. His reign currently sits at 1,075 days.
