This Week in WWE: Tyson Kidd Qualifies For Money in the Bank
Fail of the week: John Cena's Star Wars Promo Which for a few agonising minutes made everyone listening wish that they lived in a galaxy, far, far away.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jZONH9Sh1U Read of the week: John Cena's Top 50 Matches (wwe.com) The list is a reminder of John's ability, when motivated, to have brilliant matches against any number of opponents and also offers some high places to underlooked classics such as his superbly acted hardcore match with Randy Orton from Breaking Point 2009 (24th) and his tremendously exciting title scrap with Rey Mysterio from Raw last year (12th.) The countdown also plays down the most overhyped Cena clash on his palmares being his bout with CM Punk at Money in the Bank 2011 (5th), a highly entertaining yet visibly sloppy effort which still somehow received a baffling five star rating from the Wrestling Observer newsletter. On the other hand, his very mediocre clash with Triple H from Wrestlemania XXII (4th), has no business being inside the top five especially when their stunning back and forth from Night of Champions 2008 languishes eighteen places further back. The Toronto TLC Match with Edge tops the list and is a worthy winner even though personally I'd suggest that for all round emotion, storytelling and execution Cena's recent bout with Brock Lesnar from Extreme Rules (8th) represents the best individual performances of either man's career and will be remembered for a long time to come for its striking violence, poignant imagery and authentic drama. Gaffe of the Week: "He needs to get those butterflies flying in formation." Booker T offers some typically hilarious advice for Tyson Kidd during his match with Jack Swagger on Smackdown. AW should be taking notes. This week in WWE history: 5 Years Ago: One week after the Chris Benoit tragedy, the WWE strived to move on with a Raw Beat the Clock challenge contest offering the fastest victor the chance to face WWE champion John Cena at the Great American Bash. In the first match Randy Orton defeated Jeff Hardy in 7:06 which was easily toppled by King Booker's 4:30 victory over Val Venis, a performance which was then overshadowed by Bobby Lashley's 4:07 win over Shelton Benjamin. John Cena appeared later on for a main event contract signing which led to Lashley and Cena teaming up to fight off the interfering Kennedy and Booker. Cena then signed the contract before turning around to receive a sphere from Lashley who promised that he would become the next WWE champ. 10 Years Ago: On Raw, WWE champ The Undertaker defended his title against Jeff Hardy in a superb ladder match whilst Paul Heyman's challenge for any veteran to take on Brock Lesnar was accepted by Ric Flair who subsequently lost to Lesnar with an F5 despite a valiant effort to wear down his younger opponent. On Smackdown, Undertaker defended his title yet again against Kurt Angle in a controversial finish that saw Taker tapping out whilst Angle was being pinned at the same time. As a result, the referee declared the match a draw which caused an enraged Angle to lock Taker in his submission before shouting to his fallen opponent that he made him tap. 15 Years Ago: Raw featured Paul Bearer spilling the secret about Undertaker and the fire that killed his family before screaming about Taker being a murderer. Later, Undertaker confronted the truth about the terrible accident that killed his loved ones and talked about how the night had changed his persona forever. He said that he would draw strength from his family's spirit in order to strike Paul Bearer down. Meanwhile on Nitro, a main event six man tag match pitting together the team of DDP, Lex Luger and the Giant vs the NWO members Kevin Nash, Randy Savage and Scott Hall resulted in a no contest when a mass brawl instigated by an interfering Hogan provoked the appearance of Sting who managed to fend off the members of the NWO. Raw jumped to a 2.5 in the ratings but it wasn't enough to counter WCW's third consecutive 3.3 score.
