Triple H accidentally let ex-WWE announcer Jimmy Smith know that he was "probably fired" during a backstage meeting.

Smith revealed, via his 'Unlocking The Cage' podcast, that some creative chatter about Matt Riddle's history with Daniel Cormier clued him in. WWE writers wanted to know if Riddle had any prior beef with Extreme Rules guest ref Cormier, and they asked MMA buff Jimmy for the scoop.

The now-former Raw commentator spoke to Riddle, found out about their relationship and then reported back to Trips. That's when Hunter said they should probably let Michael Cole know about that background; Jimmy asked why Cole would need to know if he was calling the match on Saturday night.

The penny dropped shortly after that.

Smith realised that he wouldn't be doing play-by-play on Riddle vs. Seth Rollins after all. In fact, he wouldn't be running comms on any upcoming WWE matches, because Monday's Raw was going to be his last night. WWE confirmed this with a phone call on Tuesday morning, and that was that.

Jimmy worked the full flagship knowing that he was about to be released from his contract.
