UFC Fight Night: Lee Vs. Oliveria Main Card Preview And Predections
1. Kevin Lee (18-5) Vs. Charles Oliveira (28-8-1)
'The Motown Phenom' Kevin Lee has always been a tremendous talent but has yet to put it all together. However, Lee's decision to begin working with Firas Zahabi and Tristar Gym last summer appeared to pay immediate dividends with his highlight-reel knockout victory over Gregor Gillespie at UFC 244.
At 27, in his physical prime, and now training at a world-class facility, 2020 could be the year the Detroit product goes from being a perennial contender to a world champion. However, for that to occur, he must first get past the ever-dangerous Brazilian submission specialist Charles Oliveria in his home country.
Oliveria holds the record for the most wins via submission in UFC history with thirteen to his credit. Since moving back up to lightweight from featherweight in 2017, the 30-year-old has gone 7-1 (with six consecutive wins). That being said, during the stretch, he's taken on some lesser-known fighters and stars who appear to be in the twilight of their career. Still, winning six in a row in the UFC is a tough task regardless.
Lee, who competed as a welterweight as recently as May of 2019, has the larger frame, and despite being an inch shorter than the 5'10," Brazilian will have a three-inch reach advantage.
While Oliveria is known for his submission skills, his striking has come a long away, but Lee appears to be the faster, more explosive fighter on the feet. 'The Motown Phenom' also has excellent takedowns but will need to be extremely careful if he decides to take an amazing submission artist like Oliveria to the mat.
Looking at this fight on paper, it seems Lee could win a five-round striking battle, land a knockout shot, or control 'Do Bronx' with his wrestling. Conversely, it feels like Oliveria probably needs a submission (which is definitely possible) to get his hand raised. Lee appears to have more ways to win, making him the safer pick here.
The Pick: Lee via second-round TKO.
