Violent & Bloody AEW Matches That Made Us SICK!

3. The Elite Vs. Blackpool Combat Club - AEW Blood & Guts 2023

As with every modern WarGames match, the Elite Vs. Blackpool Combat Club was overlong and baggy and undermined by too many ideas. That the big blow-off to a feud that never felt all that urgent and personal to begin with almost existed to set up the main event of a Ring Of Honor pay-per-view didn't help the lack of purpose, but AEW promised - and delivered - Blood and Guts.

Jon Moxley looked like he had been mutilated with multiple sharp objects, and that's because he had, but the visual was more consistent with a gore-fest horror flick than even an ultra-violent plunder brawl. He was smothered in the stuff, as if buckets had been thrown at him from point blank range.

Again, the match at times felt like an excuse to do a spot-fest with weapons, although the way in which it was all sequenced was deeply impressive. The plunder was expertly assembled to make it seem as though Nick Jackson, in a hardcore update of his awesome hot tag, had happened upon piles of broken glass on which to lacerate the faces of the BCC.

In the best spot, Kenny Omega took a Mox John Woo dropkick into a screwdriver tip board. That was an excellent idea; it's an old carnival trick, one that dovetailed into a key theme of the programme, and was safer than it looked in the gruesome moment.

But the real sickening moment followed moments later, when Omega scraped his arm on the way down. From his mad scramble, he looked as though he'd shredded his flesh for real.
