WCW's 10 Biggest Mistakes

5. Fingerpoke Of Doom

WWE.comWWE.com On that same January 4th, 1999 episode of Nitro, the lucky WCW fans that decided to stick around were treated to a slap in the face to them and to the business. A week earlier, at Starrcade, Kevin Nash defeated Goldberg, ending Goldberg's lengthy undefeated streak and becoming the new WCW Champion in the process. It's pretty funny what you can accomplish in the ring when you become the head booker of a promotion at the same time that you're an active competitor. Anyway, on January 4th, we were supposed to be getting the Nash VS Goldberg rematch, but at the beginning of the show, Goldberg was arrested and we were treated to comically bad segments with Miss Elizabeth pressing charges against him for "aggravated stalking". WCW cameras were apparently allowed to film the entire police interrogation, and the entire thing was just ridiculous (Elizabeth claiming that her co-worker is always there when she's at work, etc). Hulk Hogan, who had recently announced his retirement on The Tonight Show, showed up and offered to step in for Goldberg in the main event. It was billed as a huge match, as the leader of the nWo Wolfpac was defending his WCW Title against the man who he helped create the nWo with (and the former leader of nWo "Black and White"). The match was on, and the show built and built to it. Meanwhile, Miss Elizabeth cracked under pressure and revealed to the police that she made up the accusations, so Goldberg was released from jail with about 15 minutes to go in the show. Earlier in the show, it was revealed that the arena was right across the street from the jail. Remember that. The match began... and it was over, just like that. Hogan poked Nash in the chest, Nash sold it as if he were shot with a rifle, and Hogan pinned him to become the new champion. Not only did WCW blow it by having Goldberg beat Hogan for the title on free television and then not deliver a rematch, but they had Hogan get the title back (on free television again) by beating Nash instead of having the big money rematch. The nWo had reformed, and were celebrating, when Goldberg finally arrived at the arena driving the same car that took him to the police station earlier in the show. One, it took him nearly 15 minutes to drive "across the street". Two, did the cops arrest him and drive his car to the station, or did he steal an unmarked cop car to drive back to the arena? Who the hell was writing this garbage?!? Goldberg arrived at the ring and beat some nWo members up, but the numbers were too much, and he would eventually get taken down, beat up, and spray painted. WCW fans were upset, and rightfully so. Two huge mistakes by WCW in the same episode of Nitro? That's gotta hurt.
