What Vince McMahon Told JR After WWE's WrestleMania IX
No, it wasn't, "You looked good in that toga".
Jim Ross explained on the most recent edition of his 'Grilling JR' podcast how excited he was about making his on screen WWF debut at WrestleMania IX.
The announcer had taped some episodes of Wrestling Challenge with Bobby Heenan in-studio before heading to Las Vegas, but 'Mania would be his official debut in front of federation fans. He was nervous, and admitted on the pod that he didn't really have a great time working with Randy Savage; Heenan was a different story, and made Jim feel welcome, but Randy wasn't a fan of the new play-by-play hire.
After the show, Vince McMahon pulled Ross aside and lifted his spirits.
The boss told JR that he'd never seen anybody so prepared for a broadcast before, and he liked it. Others, like Gorilla Monsoon, Heenan and Jesse Ventura, had worked a looser style on WrestleMania cards in the past. That wasn't Jim's approach. He enjoyed taking notes and making sure he had enough material for every match and segment.
McMahon thought that was a good thing. If the man in charge liked his work that much, maybe JR should've asked why he was pulled from pay-per-view broadcasts after King Of The Ring '93.
