Why Did TJ Perkins Change His WWE Ring Name?
The former TJ Perkins debunks a crazy theory.
Last week saw 205 Live's TJ Perkins became the latest WWE Superstar to have his name shortened, as the former Cruiserweight Champion started officially competing as TJP - an alias he has previously used in TNA and EVOLVE.
WWE filed a trademark for the new moniker last month, through the reason behind the change was never made official. This naturally led to speculation, with journalist Bryan Alvarez offering a bizarre theory on a recent episode of the Wrestling Observer's Bryan And Vinny Show.
On the show, Alvarez stated a WWE source had told him that Vince McMahon had ordered TJP to change his name as he hates the American restaurant chain Perkins, and doesn't want one of 205 Live's top stars to be associated with something he apparently loathes. TJP has since rubbished the rumours, however, stating that the change came at his own request:-
This isn't the first time WWE have shortened a wrestler's name, with (Antonio) Cesaro, (Alexander) Rusev, and (Adrian) Neville all losing their forenames in recent years. It looks like a win-win for both parties, however, as WWE were previously prevented from filing a trademark on Perkins' real name, and can now theoretically cash-in on "TJP."
