Why Goldberg Beat The Fiend At WWE Super ShowDown 2020
Goldberg's controversial Universal Title win explained.
Unless you've had your head buried in the same for the past 24 hours, you'll know Goldberg effectively squashed 'The Fiend' Bray Wyatt at WWE Super ShowDown 2020, taking the Universal Title in a bout that lasted little over two minutes.
Wyatt's only offensive manoeuvres were a couple of failed Mandible Claw attempts. It was a big fat mess, with the fanbase's widespread outrageous totally understandable. So why did they do it? Dave Meltzer has a believable theory in this week's edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
"Here is the reality of the situation," he writes. "WrestleMania is coming and to the average person, what match means more as the main event: Bray Wyatt vs. Roman Reigns or Goldberg vs. Reigns? As sad as it sounds, Goldberg vs. Reigns garners far more interest, even in 2020."
Meltzer then notes (rightly) that going with the stars of the past over those of the present is one of the main things that put WCW out of business.
Dave's explanation is almost certainly shared by WWE. Goldberg's SmackDown return popped a massive quarter-hour rating the other week, which likely spurred them on as well.
