The John Cena & Nikki Bella Vs. The Miz & Maryse match was bizarre. The Miz dominated Cena for about seven minutes, channelling Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania X8 by encouraging a babyface turn with manic crowd appeals. Then, suddenly, after one hot tag and no offence whatsoever beyond the kayfabe weakest finisher in wrestling, Miz was put away with one AA.

Even after that abomination, which to an extent is excusable because nobody is going to remember it, the proposal angle resonated because it felt far more real than the contrived setup threatened. Nikki looked genuinely moved, scared even, and there were no histrionic tears or celebrations. The couple simply shared a tender embrace, whispering their affection to one another. It was as tolerable as it could have been.

The transition to it was actually quite awkward. Cena more or less crowed about teasing his drugged-up girlfriend about whether or not he was ever going to pop the question before actually popping it.

It was just as well Cena did next to nothing in the match. If he exerted himself too much, that gigantic diamond might have fallen out of his jort pocket.
