In the chaos of The Attitude Era, wrestling gimmickry had almost become irrelevant in the WWE. The company had become edgier and had developed a reality based product that could legitimately compete with Ted Turner's World Championship Wrestling. However, in certain exceptional cases, there proved to be a certain niche in the WWE tailored for the 'bizarre' wrestling gimmick. One of the most bizarre was that of Al Snow. Snow developed his particular gimmick whilst contracted with Extreme Championship Wrestling from 1997 to 1998. According to Snow, he developed his gimmick after reading a book on abnormal psychology and stumbling upon a mannequin head near and ECW arena. His idea was to play the part of a schizophrenic wrestler whilst using the mannequin head as a prop to project his dual personality. Once he came to the WWE in 1998, he had perfected the gimmick to the extent that fans actually believed in his condition particularly as they witnessed many bizarre situations where Snow engaged in dialogue with the mannequin head and even wrestled with himself in a Hardcore match! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbxNxVtgDUA Just as the fans chanted for The Rock and Steve Austin, they equally chanted for Al Snow by repeating the words "Head! Head! Head!" His gimmick is a memorable product of The Attitude Era and was one of the first examples when the WWE invested in a character portraying the real psychological problems of a number of its schizophrenic fans. Whether it was done in good taste is certainly open to debate, however there is no arguing that Snow's gimmick was one of the most bizarre gimmicks to ever appear in the WWE.
