WWE: 10 Great Wrestlers Held Back By Terrible Gimmicks
5. The Spirit Squad
When D-Generation X reunited in 2006 they needed a target, essentially people to prank and belittle to the joy of the crowd; who better than a stable of five goofy cheerleaders? The Spirit Squad were covered in slime, covered in crap and squeezed into a package addressed to Kentucky at the hands of HBK and HHH. In the ring the feud was also extremely one-sided and DX would win a few five-on-two handicap matches at PPV events, before they moved their attention elsewhere. Oddly, Squad members Kenny and Mickey were midway through a World Tag Team title reign when they were getting battered by DX. It was as if the company did not know whether to bury or push the gang, so attempted to do both at the same time. After the feud with DX, the group soon became jobbers and then finally split due to Kennys anger at the team continuously losing. The majority of the Spirit Squad disappeared and were sadly never repackaged into a sellable gimmick. Nicky on the other hand would become a World Heavyweight champion years down the line as new alias, Dolph Ziggler.
