Watching old WWE events from a non-PG era can sometimes be an odd experience. Piper's Pit was a controversial, realistic talk segment that took place during a product that was mostly cartoonish in every other way. Playing a better heel than anyone could, Piper used the Pit to showcase his talent, getting himself and some of the biggest WWE storylines of the time over in the process. Even minor storylines and superstars were immediately elevated just by being in the Pit. It was hugely revolutionary for the time. According to Roddy, the Pit was completely unscripted and he was afforded a large amount of creative freedom to get himself as much heat as possible. And did he ever. The show largely boiled down to Piper using his superior microphone skills to antagonize whichever star from the roster that dared step on the show. At the time, heels were for the most part supposed to act cowardly in the face of their powerful face opponents but Piper never showed intimidation for anyone. Piper's Pit set the stage for numerous talk show segments that would follow, attempting to recreate the magic that Roddy created. Shows like Carlito's Cabana, Heartbreak Hotel, the Barber Shop, the Cutting Edge and others never managed to live up to the original though Chris Jericho's Highlight Reel arguably came the closest in recent years. Roddy Piper was Attitude before anyone even thought about the Attitude Era. He brought an intensity to the company and its promos that had never really been seen before and acted as a more entertaining alternative to the over the top personalities of the likes of Hulk Hogan and company.
