WWE: 10 New Gimmicks That Revived Wrestlers' Careers

8. Spirit Squad's Nicky To Dolph Ziggler

Spirit Squad Dolph Ziggler Whoever came up with the idea of a troupe of male cheerleaders is certainly not a creative genius, and it certainly didn€™t take a genius to work out that it wouldn€™t be a raging success. While they did win the WWE Tag Team titles, they were won and often defended with a 5 on 2 advantage and the group were never portrayed as a serious threat. It€™s significant to note that, today, only one member of the Squad remains on the active roster. The other four fizzled out pretty quickly after the Squad disbanded and only two of them are still active independent wrestler to this day. However, it didn€™t appear to be all that promising when he was repackaged, as he was lumbered with the awful sounding name of Dolph Ziggler, a take-off of the name Dirk Diggler from the movie €œBoogie Nights€. Despite also being lumbered with some awful storylines, like being romantically involved with Vickie Guerrero, and never being booked in a particularly strong manner, Ziggler€™s superb wrestling and bump taking ability (reminiscent of Mr Perfect€™s time in the WWE) has made a lasting impression with WWE fans, especially the longer-term, more hardcore fans. When Ziggler won the World Heavyweight Championship at Raw the night after WrestleMania 29, the travelling hardcore fans in attendance lifted the roof off the place. It does seem that Ziggler is destined to be a midcarder forever more, which is a great shame, but he€™s still a million miles away from being a male cheerleader.
