WWE: 10 Times Real Life Political Troubles Fuelled Top Heels

7. Bob Backlund Runs For President

In 1995, Bill Clinton was popular, but plagued by rumor and scandal regarding his personal life. Enter Presidential Candidate Bob Backlund, turning up his "Mr. Backlund" persona to ridiculous new heights. Backlund during his run in the 1990s was portrayed as a crazy old man prone to violence, including in 1994 comparing himself to God.

During his Presidential run, Backlund would cut promos supporting a conservative value system and at the height of the character, confronted a Bill Clinton impersonator at Survivor Series 1995. As the angle was gaining steam it was inexplicably dropped without explanation.

Backlund must have enjoyed playing a phony politician because in 2000, he ran for the Connecticut State Senate as a Republican. He lost.
