WWE: 10 Times WWE Said F**k You To The Fans

10. Rob Van Dam Wins Undisputed WWE Championship, Then Doesn't €“ Monday Night Raw, May 20, 2002

Though the Alliance storyline is seen as WWE's most classic blunder (and quite the "F**k you" to the WCW fans who possibly could have been snatched up at the time), one bright spot was the rise of Rob Van Dam. RVD had been ECW's hottest talent for years, but debate raged over whether he would be able to cut it in one of the big two. When he joined WWE in 2001 as part of the Invasion, he was immediately adopted by the fans as one of their own. In a sort of precursor to Daniel Bryan's current situation, "RVD" chants would fill arenas, the man scored big wins (over Steve Austin, The Rock, Kurt Angle, and The Undertaker, to name a few), but he wasn't given that real title victory. In May of the following year, in a match on Raw for The Undertaker's Undisputed WWE Championship, Van Dam nailed the Deadman with Rolling Thunder, then covered him for the three count. 'Taker's foot was on the bottom rope, but the bell was rung, the title was awarded, the announcement was made, Jim Ross gave it one of his classic screaming calls, and the fans celebrated. In an era before everybody became champion, ECW's favorite son had proven that he could cut it on the big stage. Then newly-heel Monday Night Raw owner Ric Flair appeared in the ring and declared what we all feared he would €“ Undertaker's foot was under the bottom rope, and the match would continue. 'Taker immediately hit a Last Ride and pinned RVD in one of those finishes where nobody looks good. The crowd was deflated and went home angry. It would be another four years before RVD finally became WWE Champion.
