WWE: 10 Wrestlers Loved As Upcomers But Hated Once Popular

2. Rey Mysterio

rey mysterio Rey Mysterio's position on this list is unique in that one of the greatest tragedies of his personal life ultimately led to being a paramount reason why the fans have become fed up with the San Diego native. While Mysterio is largely responsible for the rise to prominence of the American Lucha style and brought a level of attention to lightweight never before seen in the major American wrestling promotions, thoughts of Mysterio as being the top star or heavyweight champion in WWE seemed incredibly far fetched, even for a star with Mysterio's considerable wrestling prowess and talents. Then tragedy befell Mysterio and the wrestling world as a whole when Eddie Guerrero passed away in November 2005. While Guerrero had many friends in wrestling, Mysterio was among the best and almost immediately WWE started concentrating on that fact in Mysterio's matches leading up to his win at the 2006 Royal Rumble and his subsequent World Heavyweight Championship victory over Kurt Angle and Randy Orton at WrestleMania 22. In a sport of undead grave keepers, clowns and other absurdities, a 5-foot-6-inch, 175-pound Heavyweight Champion was too absurd and fans revolted, saying Mysterio's high spot on the card was simply due to WWE exploiting Guerrero's death. Mysterio's increasing fragility has also led to fans spurning him as staying healthy has been an issue for him the last few years. It seems that every time Rey is back on television, he's gone just as quickly, the victim of another injury. While Rey's dedication to the fans and the industry is admirable, fans have had their fill of Mysterio and it may be time for a major change for Mysterio, or just time to retire.
