WWE: 5 Best PPV Matches Of 2013

1. Daniel Bryan vs. John Cena, Summerslam 2013

While I'm aware that most wrestling fans on the internet would strongly disagree with this choice, I still feel that it deserves the top spot because in my opinion it had everything that a 5 star wrestling match requires: 1) Big Match Feel- This match took place at the second largest PPV in the company, had the "Richest Prize in Sports Entertainment" on the line, in the most hyped program on the card, at the Main Event in front of a raucous capacity crowd that treated this match as the biggest match on the card. I mean, seriously it doesn't get any bigger than this. Saying this match had a Big Match Feel to it would be an understatement. 2) Good Storyline- The buildup to this match was absolutely fantastic with the lines between kayfabe and reality getting extremely blurred. There were so many intersecting plotlines, and simultaneous ideas working side by side throughout the build to this match starting with the "Weakest Link" storyline of Bryan and then acknowledging Cena's status as the company's cash cow and then on real life perceptions of Bryan backstage with regard to his unsuitability for the role of face of the company and then finally the Wrestler vs. Entertainer angle of the feud. The interplay of all these angles worked really well and helped the match in terms of psychology and storytelling by throwing in several themes for the performers to work on such as Cena earning Bryan's respect in the ring and Bryan establishing himself as a main event caliber talent by beating the biggest star in the company. 3) Psychology- The psychology in this match was top notch. Not a single move was wasted or done without reason. Every move and every spot was done deliberately and for a reason. So for instance Cena's arm being hurt was utilized as a psychological tool in this match and Bryan kept working it throughout and the part at the end with Cena and Bryan slapping each other was a nice reference to the slap tradition Bryan mentioned in the promos leading up to Summerslam which also helped convey the story of Cena winning Bryan's respect in the ring. 4) Wrestling Quality- This was a picture perfect wrestling match especially considering Cena's elbow injury and had some great sequences, innovative counters and a lot of edge of the seat moments courtesy some very effective near-falls. Both men had the audience completely invested in the match and they stayed that way until the very end. 5) Finish-A clean, decisive finish minus any kind of shenanigans was the one thing that was missing from the Punk-Lesnar match that this match had. A good finish is one that does justice to the match itself and to the audience paying for the match by sending them home happy. A clean decisive finish to a hard fought, highly promoted, main event contest definitely adds to the value of the match. Rating: 5 stars This was just flat out awesome from bell to bell. So that's it from me. I hope you guys enjoy reading this and please do share your thoughts with me on what your favorite PPV matches of this year were below in the comments section.
