WWE: 5 Heel Turns That Worked (And 5 That Didn't)

4. CM Punk (2012)

CM Punk After CM Punk delivered his soon-to-be legendary "pipebomb" on the June 27, 2011 edition of Raw, there was no turning back; fans were going to cheer this man for the rest of his career. After all, Punk had really struck a chord with so many fans when he said that John Cena was great at sucking up to authority, and that smaller guys like him could not get into the main event of Wrestlemania because that spot was reserved for The Rock (or as Punk patronizingly called him, "Dwayne"). Punk's popularity soared after this heated promo, yet in the summer of 2012, the WWE bizarrely decided to turn him heel. The Rock was ready to come back for a brief run, and with him and John Cena seemingly never allowed to be bad guys anymore, the company decided that CM Punk could fill that role. The problem was that fans were not buying it. At September's Night of Champions, Punk faced Cena in Cena's hometown, yet CM Punk seemed to be getting louder cheers. Even against The Rock at the Royal Rumble, and the Undertaker and his streak at Wrestlemania, Punk received solid fan support. Realizing they were fighting a losing battle, the WWE had CM Punk turn back into a face in June of 2013.
