WWE: 8 WrestleMania Main Events That Almost Happened

6. WrestleMania XIII: Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels

Bret Hart Shawn Michales After Shawn Michaels achieved his boyhood dream of becoming WWE Champion with a victory over Bret Hart at WrestleMania XII, the Hart took a leave of absence from WWE. He came back to feud with Steve Austin while Michaels lost the title to, and then regained the title from, Sid Vicious. However, the crowd€™s waning good will toward Michaels, especially in WWE€™s home arena of Madison Square Garden, led to the decision to put the belt back on Bret in a rematch between the two men at WrestleMania XIII. The bad blood between Hart and Michaels at the time has been documented and chronicled for years €“ needless to say, Michaels was not happy to be on the losing end of this encounter. That fact, coupled with a knee injury that required surgery, led Michaels to vacate the title on Raw, famously declaring that he had €œlost smile€ and needed to go find it, his future in the sport uncertain to the fans. At WrestleMania, Hart would not be in the title picture €“ instead he would defeat Steve Austin in one of the greatest matches in wrestling history, and help catapult Austin to superstardom.
