6. WrestleMania XIII: Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels
After Shawn Michaels achieved his boyhood dream of becoming WWE Champion with a victory over Bret Hart at WrestleMania XII, the Hart took a leave of absence from WWE. He came back to feud with Steve Austin while Michaels lost the title to, and then regained the title from, Sid Vicious. However, the crowds waning good will toward Michaels, especially in WWEs home arena of Madison Square Garden, led to the decision to put the belt back on Bret in a rematch between the two men at WrestleMania XIII. The bad blood between Hart and Michaels at the time has been documented and chronicled for years needless to say, Michaels was not happy to be on the losing end of this encounter. That fact, coupled with a knee injury that required surgery, led Michaels to vacate the title on Raw, famously declaring that he had lost smile and needed to go find it, his future in the sport uncertain to the fans. At WrestleMania, Hart would not be in the title picture instead he would defeat Steve Austin in one of the greatest matches in wrestling history, and help catapult Austin to superstardom.
